Sarasota County, FL - Board of Elections

Candidate Statement

Emilio Carlesimo

My name is Emilio Carlesimo and I am running for Seat #1 on the Venice City Council.

Please visit my web-site:

The knowledge and experience I gained from City Council and extensive community service uniquely qualifies me for service on Seat 1. No diploma, title, or certificate qualifies as a substitute for genuine experience and demonstrated ability.

My Commitment to the Community:

• Two term as a Venice City Council Member, Vice-Mayor and active community our City, then and today.
• Service retirement from the Detroit Fire Department after 27 years of service.
• Service retirement from the Sarasota County Fire Dept. after 13 years of service
• U.S. Army veteran

We had major accomplishments during my Council terms:
• Resolved prior legal issues (from 2.4 million in 2009 to $379 K today)
• Maintained level of services through the recession without raising taxes
• Dealt with costly health-care benefits
• Resolved the Fire/Police pension deficit issue
• Spearheaded stakeholders group that investigated and resolved inequities in calculating utility rates to condominiums
• Active role in the Venice Beach renourishment project with the Army Corps of Engineers
• Active role in bicycle lane marking project throughout Venice
• Used all legal means to enforce limits on development density and compatibility, resulting in full compliance in addition to concessions benefitting all Venetians
As a resident, I led the charge against the proposed Fire Fee Assessment.

My wife Brenda and I moved to Venice 29 years ago and since then I have been and continue to be active in the health and civic affairs of our community:

• Venice Regional Bayfront Hospital
• The Salvation Army
• Venice Area Beautification Inc. (VABI)
• Venice MainStreet
• Venice Area Chamber of Commerce
• Venice Heritage Inc.
• Venice Aviation Society Inc.
• Venice Italian American Club
• Member Epiphany Cathedral
• Conservation Foundation

I understand the issues facing our city such as growth and traffic, and the importance of working within our means by balancing the budget without raising taxes.

Nothing can replace the experience of serving in Public Safety, sitting at the bargaining table on the Union's side in Detroit, and being a Policy-Maker on Council and negotiating from the other prospective.
