FACT SHEET - What you need to know about the Presidential Preference Primary
|On March 17, 2020, Florida will hold its Presidential Preference Primary (PPP). The PPP is part of the nominating process for U.S. president. It allows the major political parties to nominate their candidates who will go on to face other candidates in the November General Election.
Here is some important information to help you prepare for the PPP:
This year, both major political parties -Democratic and Republican - will hold primaries on March 17. The Florida Department of State has certified the names of 16 Democratic candidates and four Republican candidates for the respective PPP ballots. Visit SarasotaVotes.com
Because Florida is a closed primary state, voters are eligible to vote only for the candidates of their own party in a primary election. Voters who are registered with a minor political party or without party affiliation (NPA) are not allowed to vote a Democratic or Republican ballot in the March 17 presidential preference primary. However, these voters may vote in nonpartisan contests and on ballot questions, such as the Holiday Park Park & Recreation District election (Pct 341), and the Longboat Key bond referendum (Pct 201), being held on March 17, also.
Voters may change party affiliation up to 29 days before the registration books close for an election. For the March 17 election, that party change deadline is February 18.
Party changes must be made by:
· submitting a Florida Voter Registration Application with an original signature by mail or in person to the supervisor of elections,
· submitting other signed written notice, including date of birth or Florida voter registration number and original signature, to the supervisor of elections, or
· updating your voter information online at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov.
Any voter may request a vote-by-mail ballot by email to email@example.com (include your date of birth or voter registration number), or by calling 941.861.8618.
Early voting for the March 17 PPP begins Saturday, March 7 and continues through Saturday, March 14, 8:30-4:30 p.m. daily.
