Initiative Petitions

Florida citizens have the right to propose amendments to the Florida Constitution through an initiative petition process. The Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections office verifies thousands of initiative petitions, signed by Sarasota County voters, each year. Sponsors of initiatives must secure the required number of valid signatures for their initiatives to be placed on a general election ballot.

Pursuant to 100.371(11)(b), F.S., Sarasota County's actual cost of signature verification is $0.50 per initiative petition.

More information on Florida's petition process including a list of current initiatives, can be found on the Florida Department of State's Constitutional Amendments/Initiatives website.

Pursuant to 100.371(11)(c), F.S., at least once per month the elections office publishes on its website the Active Initiative Petition Summary for Sarasota County that includes information about initiative petitions received by our office.
